A new SAFF league with independent clubs! This year saw the birth of the clubs Solna Axemen, Bromma Vikings and Södermalm Blues. Three persons argued heavily for this at the start of the year and they ended up coaching one team each; Ryan Kingsley for Solna, Daniel Jordan for Södermalm and Joel Kirk for Bromma. With the formation of the self governing clubs SAFF has taken the league to the next level where the clubs organise their activities and the SAFF board is responsible for the league and the regional team Stockholm Dynamite.
One highlight of the year was 2007 Brownlow medallist and AFL Premiership winner Jimmy Bartel coming to Stockholm for the SAFF Awards night. The Geelong player kindly helped out by handing out the SAFF awards and generously took part in our celebrations.
Another big moment was to see a junior team playing a football game for the first time in Stockholm.
The number of SAFF players almost doubled from the year before and approximately 80 players from Sweden, Australia, Ireland, Germany, Canada, USA and South Africa played in the SAFF games during 2007.
In the
SAFF Premiership Bromma started out very strong and secured a place in the Grand Final before the summer break. But they would lose several key players during the season and the question was if they would be able to keep the high level of football. Solna with its strong Swedish crew showed early on that they were a force to be reckoned with. However a 1 point defeat late in the season gave Södermalm the chance they had been waiting for. The injury struck Södermalm struggled early in the season but came back with a vengeance and secured the two biggest winning margins of the year. Still it wasn’t enough and on Grand Final day Solna and Bromma took to the field. Although Bromma got off to an early lead Solna proved too strong on the day and won with 104-69. Best on ground was Solna coach Ryan Kingsley.
We couldn’t have planned for a more exiting league seeing that it was up to the last game which of two teams would go to the Grand Final.

In order to help develop the recently started team in Uppsala, Bromma organised a pre season match
(55-22) at Årsta and later in the year Solna went to Uppsala for a game
(56-37).
As a curtain raiser for the SAFF Grand Final Södermalm played a visiting Karlstad Dragons and won by
73-55.
The regional side
Stockholm Dynamite had a very successful year; 5 games and 5 wins, against
Falun,
Karlstad,
Skåne,
Gothenburg and
Uppsala. By winning over Skåne and Gothenburg, Stockholm ended up on top in the Tri-Regional Cup.
Previous years SAFF has worked hard with
junior development by arranging clinics in schools around Stockholm. The plan this year was to have juniors in Stockholm training regularly and possibly playing some games. Marcus Rappoccio and Trevor Edwards went ahead and started training kids from Stockholm International School. By May they had a squad ready to play the first junior Australian Football game in Stockholm. Headed by Dan McClaer, a team of juniors from Port Malmö came up to Stockholm to play a game and enjoy a social experience. A great game played in good spirit featured bumps, tackles and strong marks, just as you would expect from a game of footy. At the end of the day the Malmö team proved too strong and won by
29-8. Both players and spectators enjoyed the day and hopefully we will see more of this in the future.
After summer history was in the making again, as a team from England came over for the first international junior Australian Football game in Stockholm. The Stockholm team, who for the day featured one girl in the line up, did their best but the professional English took home the flag in the first Waterloo Cup.
It has been continuously difficult to find our own football oval as there are not many fields in Stockholm big enough to hold a full sized footy oval. However, Brad Goodfellow managed to convince the Swedish King to let us use his field at Stockholm University and after Jordo arranged goal posts we now have our own 15-a-side oval with permanent posts; the 'Bradley William Oval'.
On the social side of things SAFF took this to the next level this year. All the players and supporters have enjoyed several successful events; Australia day at Foggy Dews, ANZAC day game, the Mock wedding party held after the Sthlm-Skåne game, AFL Grand Final breakfast at restaurant Oxen, SAFF Awards night at restaurant Oxen and the end of the season trip to Bratislava. The social committee consisting of Joel Kirk and Trevor Edwards deserves a special mention as this is not just about partying. These events are an important part of the SAFF income. Money that help develop football in Stockholm, especially junior activities. The social side of footy is also a big part of the sport and something that makes it unique to many other sports in Sweden and it is an attraction for new players. In addition, it can also help bring people closer to each other. Together with the national game in Germany, the Mock Wedding helped us bond with our brothers in Skåne.
